Loitering

There is often a perception that when youths gather for a period of time in any one place that they are up to no good. This is rarely the case but there is no doubt that the apprehension felt by people when seeing such a group is real. The City of Surrey and the agencies with which it works provide many opportunities for young people to spend their leisure time in enjoyable and positive ways. Part of the purpose of the outreach work taking place is to inform these young people of the resources available to them. If you would like more information about some of these please visit our website at  www.youth.surrey.ca

When Loitering Becomes Threatening

When such loitering becomes a threat to businesses and other establishments it is suggested that you speak with your Crime Prevention Coordinator who works from your local Surrey RCMP District Office. They will be able to provide strategies that are incremental in nature and will help reduce the threat of confrontation.

Preventing Loitering

Some premises have started using a retail product called the Mosquito to prevent teen loitering in and around stores, malls, recreation centres and schools. The small unit transmits sound at a frequency that is bothersome to teens, but cannot be heard by adults over the age of 25.  It is not in a bothersome range for young children, and targets teens age 15 and older only.  Information on the technology can be found at www.noloitering.ca
